Figured walnut Chapeau de Gendarme bed
Circa 1855

I just love this bed; it has a 'high gloss' finish and is very showy indeed. We have another bed which is also showy and glossy (Ref 1397) but this is more 'substantial' more 'gutsy', it has more 'shape', just more of everything!

This style of bed is known in France as "Chapeau de Gendarme" or Policeman's Hat, as ends of the bed are in the shape of a policeman's hat during the reigns of Louis Philippe and Napoleon III when these beds were the height of fashion. They have one decorative side and the other side is completely plain, as the bed would have been placed sideways along the wall.
