Figured walnut Lit A Rouleau
Circa 1855

This is a beautifully figured walnut bed with a high gloss finish. It is light and elegant and is a bit ‘quirky’ as the two end panels are completely different, as you will see from the image below. This is unusual as the craftsmen of this period took symmetry pretty seriously and were inclined to match everything up perfectly. Either they had no matching wood, which I think is unlikely in a bed of this quality, or else, more likely, the cabinet-maker just had a flight of fancy!

The beds from this period have one decorative side and the other side is completely plain, as the bed would have been placed sideways along the wall. This would have been surrounded by drapes, which would have been closed around the bed at night for warmth and privacy.
