Henri II style rosewood.
UK£1400
Circa 1860
Price to include a new upholstered base ready for a mattress.
This bed would have been made around about the time of the
reign of Napoleon III when dark exotic woods were the height
of fashion.
Rosewood was then, and still is an expensive wood, so the best
craftsmen were normally used to work with it.
Consequently rosewood beds from this particular period are excellent
quality and beautifully made.
I think the proportions are particularly good on this bed. The
tall crest and headboard give it an elegant air. It has a lot
of presence. Usually the beds in this style are not so attractive,
more heavy and masculine, perhaps. I just find this bed particularly
appealing.
Although this bed was made in the mid 1800’s it follows
an earlier style called Renaissance, sometimes referred to as
Henri II.
Like most of our antique beds it is not a full 5’ wide
although the image we have taken is with a 5’ wide base
and mattress.
Most of our customers say that, as the beds are interesting
and decorative a small ‘overhang’ is not a problem.
Therefore this bed can take either a 4’6” or 5’(with
overhang) wide, base and mattress.
It measures 57” at the widest point.
59” at highest point on the headboard.
34” to highest point on footboard.
